Online Academics--An (Unfair) Comparison
Two sources for this week's discussion of academics online. The comparison isn't really fair, as it is strongly biased towards Creative Commons style openness. But still, which of these models seems more appropriate for education:

Groups, Please post
Please post a list of your group members, and your ideas for the group project, on your class blog.
If you do not yet have a group, look over the existing groups and see if there's one you can join.

Reading for Break
I just found this (http://iat.ubalt.edu/moulthrop/talks/iowa/readBlue/readBlue.fwk.html) online. Stuart Moulthrop talking about Joyc'es Twelve Blue.
Read this and the Aarseth sample chapter as you consider the the question for this week:
what is narrative?

Post for weeks 2-3
Before you begin the Remix project, post your ideas to your class blog.
- What materials will you work with (public domain, CC, your own)?
- What are you trying to do, and why?
- What tools will you use (html, Flash, etc)?
Not just artists
The need for open access to cultural material is not just an issue for artists. Academics, like Danah Boyd, also see the need to make information (such as academic articles) freely available.

Library of Congress Flickr site
If you need some photos for a project, here's a great site--the LoC has put two massive photo collections online: http://www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/
These are Public Domain images ("no known copyright restrictions). The "1930s-1940s in color" set is amazing.

Electronic Literature Collection
So, what do you think of the ELC? Choose a work which you find appealing, irritating, engaging, confusing, whatever. Post a few paragraphs to your class blog for this week:
What did you like?
Why?
What did you expect electronic literature to be?
What genre is the piece you choose (poetry? fiction? other?)

Welcome Message
Welcome to English 344 (Digital Writing in the Genres: Creative and Non-Fiction). I will post the prompts for your weekly blog posts here, and you may post comments, questions, observations, links, and the like. But I expect your main posts will be on your own blogs, which will be listed in the sidebar.
